Hey There!

Hope you are all having a great weekend! I have been a bit busy and as the fiction world has almost ground to a halt as there is little fiction to be found but I and my assistants have searched high and love to provide some reading for you to enjoy today!

Before we get on with the fiction I have a couple of announcements: Dreamcatching - stories by Lariel and Temora has moved to http://www.dreamcatching.netfirms.com/.

Second I just want to remind those reading that 1 you are welcome to share recommendations that I will post for stories! 2 that the Raven's Recommends is made up of lots of factors .. but mostly Did I Like The Story! Even if it was junk food for the soul was it worth the read! We all have different tastes sometimes even when a story may offend some individuals and sometimes the stories are a fun indulgence and the wit alone is worth the read.. I try to give you a heads up on those I liked. Alas some of you may not have the breath of mind or the sick wit I have to enjoy diverse stories... so be off with you and find your own treasures as there are always many to be found here.

Again your opinion is welcome as well.. and that alone should tell you we are not the experts :) I or we here who recommend just love fiction ;)

Good Evening Folks!

Tonight we have some special fiction!

Funny I was feeling a bit stressed.. yes .. the little men in the straight jackets.. almost came by the office. So I decided to take a few days off to relax.. and read of course and just chill. Someone must be looking out for me as just as I am sitting here deciding what new wonderful fiction to read when I find that one of my most favored authors has just completed a new story for me to devour! Yep Yep... Kiera Dellacroix has graced us with a new tale Fractured Tapestry!! So I don't want to keep you all .. and I really must continue this great tale.. so ..go be off with you and read some new fiction!!     Random Ramblings (by Celine)

    Oooooh... a little birdy (named Raven) reminded me today (the 21st) is Singer's birthday! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to email her at ubersinger@aol.com and wish her a big ol' happy birthday. Added points if you sing.

    Happy birthday, Singer... hope it's a great one.

    In other news... short ramble, a bunch of announcements, and no story updates. I'll get to the updates tomorrow when I'm feeling better.

    In money news, I spent $300 on Sunday. It wasn't planned, and I really could have done without spending it. But the TV kinda decided it was time to go to the great television heaven in the sky, so I had to buy a new one. I drooled over flat screens, dreamed of HDTV, but in the end settled for a regular TV. My bank account wouldn't allow for anything else. It's a nice TV, though, so I'm happy. Well, happy and $300 poorer.

    In kitty news, something amazing happened on Saturday. My mother, with whom I live, said something I never thought I'd hear her say. She's had her problems with Tango the Wonder Kitty in the past, since he has that rambunctious streak in him. He's broken one of her vases, etc. But on Saturday, she looked at Tango, and said he'd turned out to be a pretty good cat.

    I was surprised, but glad she said that. 'Cause, as y'all may know, he's my buddy. Now if I can just convince him he really doesn't need to get behind the washer and dryer and play, we'll be fine.

    In Purple Plaything (it's a scooter, folks, I swear!) news, it's still running just fine. Thank goodness. Just as an FYI, because I'm sure you're all just sitting out there wondering how the PP is. And now you know. Your lives are complete. No, don't thank me. Just bask in the glow of completeness.

    In teeth news, I had a couple of broken ones filled today. It was fun. Not. Remind me to not do it again anytime soon. No demon dentist from Hell working on me this time, though he was in the next booth over. It was difficult, but I managed to control my fist of death (ala the Dilbert strip), which is triggered whenever I'm in the same general vicinity of him.

    The bard phair, aka Marguerite Mullaney, has a brand new web site. I think it's quite nifty, but then again, I did make it, so I'm a little biased.

    We're in the process of adding more stories, so watch for those. You can also read about her sci-fi book, The Aethereal Sea, which is coming out later this year.

    Xena Live II is wrapping up:

    If any of you in the Chicago area haven't gone to see Xena Live II, the live stage play based on 'Xena' yet, now's the time.

    It's been extended through June 2, so see it before it's too late. If you've already seen it, then by golly, see it again. Thanks to Lynn for the reminder about the play. Lynn called it, and I quote, "an absolute blast." You can't beat that.

    GabGold, aka Gabrielle Goldsby, has moved her site to a new domain, and it's lookin' right nice:

    Her latest novel-length story, Wall of Silence, is going to be published by RAP Books's Quest Books imprint. That is very spiffy... Gabrielle is one of my favorite authors.

Well hope all of you out there are having a good weekend... it does seem as if the authors must be having fun in the sun as we don't seem to have too many additions tonight. Alas.. I guess they deserve to have fun too, but remember all you wonderful writers out there.. we are here.. um waiting with baited breath.. ohhh that does not sound too good. Hey There!!

I must tell you all that I am extremely excited to announce that Beyond Uber has hit over 1,000,000 hits in just 11 months!!!!

(sniff, sniff) I must thank you all for the support of this site and all us nutballs here at Beyond Uber who have no life.. um I mean are dedicated to informing you of all the wonderful fiction we can find! We currently have over 800 of you fools.. um I mean dedicated fans and readers who even want to receive these handy dandy links via our email list! By the way are all your friends on our list yet .. can we get this up to 1,000 before the end of the year.. how about it??!!

I know that Singer is quite excited or at least she will be when she opens her email :) She has been very busy but will be coming back with more great art work for all of us to enjoy
Then there is our wonderful Rambler Celine.. THANK YOU!! or Thank her as she has been wonderful from cleaning up my html errors to posting to just being a great .. um everything.. yep that about covers it!! :)

Random Ramblings (by Celine)

Lord, have mercy on my weak and tormented soul. I went to the store today on my (for now) trusty Purple Plaything (again, people... it's a scooter, really!), and ended up buying a small bag of Doritos corn chips. Okay, two small bags. It wasn't my fault! It was... uh... hmm. Guess it was my fault. I'm scum.

But the chips tasted good. No, I haven't eaten them all, but I'm working on it. ;)

In other news, I want to give a shout out (that's a phrase I don't use in everyday conversation) to spiffy bard and friend, Cephalgia, for her kind and welcome support after she read about my having a sucky day yesterday. By the way... did you know her bard name, Cephalgia, means 'headache'? It does. If that's meant to indicate that Ceph *is* a headache, well I just happen to disagree. I know headaches, and she just ain't one.

No, people like Martha Stewart give me headaches (and that's *not* a good thing... though I do like making fun of her. I'm a bad, bad person... or not). A local car dealer named Scott Thomason gives me a whopping headache ("If you don't come see me today, I can't save you any money" is his favorite phrase... but, really, Scott, if I don't buy a car, I save all kinds of money!).

I should stop writing about headaches... I'm developing a psychosomatic one right now just thinking about it. :)

Random Ramblings (by Celine)

I've had one of those really sucky days. So, I hereby declare a worldwide ban on sucky days, by the power vested in me by the site of Beyond Uber. Think it will work? Yeah, me either, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

In other news, Tango's developed yet another skill. We keep kitty treats in the cupboard next to the refrigerator in the kitchen. And you know who has figured that out. He's also figured out how to open the cupboard and knock the treats out so he can get at 'em. He's nothing if not resourceful.

Speaking of resourceful, one of my other cats, Murphy with Many Claws, has many interesting talents, and he displayed a new one today. He has extra toes on each front paw, and they're pretty big... kinda like having thumbs. So he uses that unique feature quite a bit. Usually, he gets dry cat food out of the dish, basically cupping it in his paw, and brings it up to his mouth. Just like a human would. Today he was doing that with water. It was in a cup, and he couldn't fit his head down in to drink it, so he dipped his paw in and licked it dry.

You may be asking why he was drinking out of a cup. Well, it's because the kitchen faucet wasn't turned on. If it had been, he would have been drinking out of that.

In related news, I'm going to have to buy a new lid for the guinea pig cage. The cats lay on it all the time... and play on it, and claw at it (it's metal, so I don't understand why, exactly), and in general, spend a great deal of time on it. So it's no surprise it's finally starting to give in. The pet supply place has a new lid on order for me. My cats just don't know the lengths I go to to keep them happy.

Of course, I'm pretty sure they'd be happy batting around the guinea pig, too, which they would do without the lid. In their minds it's playing. In Piggie's mind it's... well, it's not.

Random Ramblings (by Celine)

Howdy, friends. We have another very spiffy guest rambler to entertain y'all with... Rocky, who wrote Serendipity, which is one I definitely recommend. And now, on with the show...


Celine asked me for a ramble. Well by howdy, I wrote one! A windy (yet true) tale about my early days as a parts clerk that I call: "Dog Day Afternoon."

It was during a postal strike many years ago, that I had to deliver invoices as well as my regular deliveries. This put me behind in my regular schedule and I sometimes tried rash short cuts in an effort to get caught up.

The rain had been coming down in sheets since early morning and judging from the slate gray sky it wasn't going to let up any. I had delivered all the orders for the town I was in and decided to take the back road in the ass end of the place to the highway. That is when disaster struck. The tiny dirt road had been sucking up rain since morning and even though it looked fine, I promptly got the delivery van stuck up to the axles. So much for getting caught up.

What had been a pretty little tree-lined road was now a quagmire of sucking black pudding and it was all I could do just to get out of the truck and over to the edge of the road where the earth was a bit firmer. The rain was still thundering down and I was immediately soaked to the skin as I slogged back towards the nearest house.

The town is a small vacation community, or at least it was; it's a lot bigger now, but at that time there was a fair hike between houses, especially on the outskirts where I was. The first house on the road was a beautiful little summer cottage complete with fancy lattice and a lovely wrap-around veranda. I was glad to be free of the muddy road as I walked up the cement sidewalk to the house, stepped onto the veranda and looked into an open door to my left. "Hello?" I called.

Then I heard it.

A low resonant sound that once you hear, you never forget. It was a very quiet growl. Slowly I turned and looked over my right shoulder to the open space of the veranda. There, curled up in a large wicker dog bed, was a beautiful example of Doberman Pinscher with a lovely white set of sharp looking teeth.

I'm sure that my eyes were huge as I whispered, "Nice doggie..."

I don't recall going back down the steps of the veranda, rather that I moved slowly as fast as I was able; (believe me, it is possible) backwards the way I came. I was so scared that I almost peed myself; kind of redundant now that I think about it, since at that point I was wet clean through anyway. Thank heavens that the dog had no desire to follow me into the pouring rain.

I had to trudge through another quarter mile to the next row of houses, which were part of the town proper. The road had evolved into a back lane in the rear of a strip of row housing with a high cinder block wall that I had to walk to the far end of, to get to the short alley that led to the front street. I could hear dog voices of all types as I trod along beside that wall, and every yip, bark and bow-wow sent my heart racing after my near brush with certain death.

...Now don't get me wrong, I like dogs. I have a dog. However, large strange dogs have a habit of biting delivery people. I was once bitten by an old St. Bernard cross, which could have easily been mistaken for a rug. Honestly, in all the times I had come and gone to that shop I had never seen that dog move. On the other hand, I had never seen an older woman vault over a large office desk like the dog's owner did, either. So you can see why I was paranoid. My rule was after that: If I saw a dog, I stayed in the truck until I saw someone that belonged to the dog.

Well, back to my story... There I was: wet, recovering from a heart attack and feeling naked without my truck. I turned into the alley and to my right was the wooden fenced back yard of the last unit. I decided I could save myself some time by ringing the back bell and opened the gate.

Straight into the barking, growling and snapping face of an angry, wet German shepherd on a very skinny looking tether. I jumped up and back into the far wall of the alley without even bending my knees. The gate slammed itself shut but I could still hear the ferocious barking coming from its other side. I felt like crying after being terrified twice in the last half hour but again it was redundant because any tears would have been lost in the rainwater running down my face.

Trudging out onto the street, I walked up to the first door I could see. I rang the bell. The look on the face of the boy who answered the door, told me what a sight I must have been, mud up to my knees, soaking wet and by that time shivering with the cold (as well as fright). I explained that I was stuck and asked to use the phone to call a wrecker. The young man was very kind. He laid a trail of newspaper into the kitchen, to a chair by the phone and even went and got me a towel. I had called for the tow and sat scrubbing my hair with the towel when flying out of nowhere came two miniature poodles. They bounded up into my lap, squirming, yipping and licking my face.

All the tension was gone. I laughed almost giddily with relief. I knew then that my day of doggy terror was over.

Random Ramblings (by Celine)

Chocolate. The Purple Plaything. What do these two things have in common? Both of them are at my house. Yes, you heard right. *Both* of them. You all should come over to my house and see. I'll make up the hideaway bed in the living room. We can eat chocolate and look at the Purple Plaything.

The first happy thing came in the form of a boat load of chocolate from my friend and bard Cephalgia (complete with a rubber ducky on top... uh, the chocolate had the ducky on top, not Cephalgia. I think.), and the second was delivered by my brother on Saturday morning. In working order. The scooter, I mean. Whether my brother's in working order is always in question. ;)

I am a happy camper, friends.

The chocolate is of the Ethel M's type (http://www.ethelm.com) and is *so* very good. Bad for my waist line, but oh, what a way to go. As I told Ceph, I'm in chocolate-induced heaven.

The Purple Plaything (for those uninformed, no that's not some sort of sex toy, it's a Honda scooter... which also vibrates, but in a different way) is alive and fairly well. It's not permanently fixed... it's actually duct taped until further notice because of some missing part on an air box (sounds like a deluxe outdoor box at a ball game)... but it's working very well. Duct tape rules. And the scooter even goes a wee bit faster, and can reach a whopping 30mph! Look out, everyone! Girls kick ass, indeed.

So I zipped all over my little hometown on Saturday, making up reasons to go various places. I ended up going to two grocery stores (which, incidentally, is the sum total of such stores where I live), Bi-Mart (kinda sorta like Wal-Mart, only smaller), the pet supply place, a plant sale, the gas station, Dairy Queen (Bad me! Bad, bad me!) for a sundae, and the bank's ATM to fund my expenditures.

All was powered by Ethel M's chocolate. It's a good thing. The little ducky, by the way, will be my new bath mate. It should give Tango the Wonder Kitty something to bat at when he sits on the edge of the tub.

Another new thing in my life - The Sims (http://www.thesims.com). I ran into a former neighbor at the store the other day, and she said she's become addicted to The Sims computer game, which lets you build houses and simulate the lives of little simulated people, literally spending hours at it without realizing it. So I, being ever watchful and frugal over my free time, decided to give it a shot. And, uh... well. I'm addicted. Of course, I had to start with a Dar and Kerry duo (it was such a sweet moment when they fell in love... *sigh*), and they've since adopted two children, a boy and a girl. It's all very sweet, really.
